nova bar
a new bar for the nova cinemas, carlton, 2010
The design draws inspiration from the golden era of film and cinema construction, 1930s to 1940s.
The deco era’s interest in abstracted geometric patterning, sunburst and chevron shapes, as well as their concurrent interest in neo-classical styling have been re-interpreted.
The bar uses simple classical archways to create more intimate spaces and frame interior views, while also referencing the existing arched windows to Lygon st. The chevron zig-zagging mirrored panels give jewel-like reflections, and the backlit marble bar and wall panels give the bar a classic hollywood era glamour.
